Why doors fail early in Altona

Altona sits on the water, and that decides most of the work. Salt carries in on the southerly and settles on everything metal: torsion springs, cables, track bolts, the opener chain. A door that would last fifteen years inland starts binding here at eight or nine. The tell is always the same, a squeal on the way up and a door that stops halfway.

The housing stock is mostly 1950s to 1970s brick veneer with single detached garages, plus the newer estates out towards Altona Meadows and Point Cook running sectional doors on light rails. Two different jobs: old tilt doors that need hardware nobody stocks any more, and modern sectionals that need the tracks kept true.

How quickly can Altona Garage Doors get here?
Usually 30 to 45 minutes across Altona, Seaholme and Altona North, a little longer out to Point Cook. If the door is stuck open and the house is exposed, say so when you ring and we will move you up the run.
My spring snapped. Can I still open the door?
Not by hand, and please do not try. A sectional door weighs 80 to 140 kilos and the spring is what carries that weight, so with it broken the whole load is on you. If the car has to come out, ring and we will talk you through the manual release safely on the phone.
Why do doors near the bay fail sooner?
Salt. It settles on the springs, cables and track bolts and works into the coating, and once the galvanising is gone the steel goes quickly. It is why we service yearly here rather than every two or three years, and why we specify galvanised hardware on every new install.
Is it worth repairing an old tilt door?
Often yes. The panel itself usually outlives the hardware, and pivot arms, springs and cables are all replaceable. What decides it is the frame. If the timber jamb has gone soft at the base, and near the water it often has, then a new door on a new frame is the honest answer.
